For some students, the struggle to read and spell may be caused by dyslexia. We, as a school, cannot give a diagnosis to a student. We do strive, however, through observations and assessments, to identify students who show signs of dyslexia or other reading difficulties and provide the extra support they need.

The Cathedral dyslexia program is based on the Barton Reading & Spelling System, which was designed as an intense intervention for students who struggle to easily and accurately decode words when reading, who by second grade are slow and inaccurate readers, and who have always struggled with spelling

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) state that 95 percent of poor readers can be brought up to grade level if they receive effective help early.

One-on-one tutoring

Cathedral offers one-on-one tutoring for dyslexia intervention because it has been proven to be the best and most effective method for helping each child succeed. In this setting, a tutor can present the material at exactly the right page for each student.

Orton-Gillingham

Orton-Gillingham is the philosophy behind the Barton Reading & Spelling System that we use at Cathedral School. The program teaches reading, writing, spelling, and verbal and written expression by engaging the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities simultaneously whenever possible. Many research studies have shown that this type of instructional program is the best way to help students who struggle to decode and sound out words.
